Inlays and Onlays in La Palma

What are Inlays and Onlays?

Both an inlay and onlay are designed to improve the look of your smile. They can be placed either inside the cusps of a tooth (inlay) or on top of a tooth (onlay). You can think of either of these restorations as a smaller version of a dental crown. Rather than compromising the entire tooth with a full dental crown when it’s not needed, an inlay or onlay can be placed.

Why might Inlays and Onlays be needed?

Teeth very rarely break or crack in a perfect manner. If the crack is on the biting surface of a tooth, an inlay or onlay can be placed. If you have a tooth with a large area of decay or a big filling, either of these restorations can be used to enhance the tooth. The vast majority of inlays and onlays can last for decades, making them a solid solution to many dental problems.

Who is a candidate for Inlays and Onlays?

To determine if an inlay or onlay is needed, we can examine your teeth. To prevent further damage to the tooth, it’s a good idea to place the restoration as soon as possible. Inlays as well as onlays are often specific to the posterior (back) teeth. If you have an older restoration, we’ll be able to replace it easily in our office.

What happens during the procedure for Inlays and Onlays?

The procedure will begin by removing decay, old filling material or smoothing out the tooth that will be receiving the restoration. Impressions are then taken and used to make the custom inlay or onlay just for you. You will come in for a second visit to have the restoration placed. You can expect the new restoration to enhance your smile and improve the look of your teeth. You should brush the inlay or onlay as usual and floss around the tooth to keep it looking and feeling its absolute best.
